Most Americans support an internet kill-switch

I’m shocked. According to some research by Unisys, most Americans support that the president should have access to an “internet kill-switch”. By this they mean the president should have the possibility of shutting down the internet, or at least parts of it. This switch would then be used in case of some kind of Cyber Attack.

I think it will be a little extreme to give 1 person access to shut down the internet. If the president shut down the internet it will most likely have a bad effect on the WHOLE WORLD! I know that cyber criminality is a growing issue, but still?

I will admit that I don’t know everything about this. I am just surprised to see that so many people want to give 1 person access to shut down the internet.

What do you guys think?

Sounds like a load of rubbish given how most people do not even trust the government.

That's a horrible idea. I wouldn't trust anyone with it, let alone some old guy who probably doesn't know how computers work.

This confuses me because I have no idea how the government can somehow claim that the internet is theirs... I can understand being able to hit a shutoff switch to cut off the DoD based internet services, like raising a drawbridge. But to shut down the internet entirely has actually come to a point of being very dangerous.

Fuck that jazz. The internet is perhaps one of the greatest/most important things we have going for us, there should be absolutely no political bs attached to it whatsoever.

No, that's ridiculous. We are freaking out here. I remember when the only thing we had to fear was fear itself. Well, not personally, but I've read about that time. Now we fear bottles of water and shoes at the airport and we're worried about the Al Qeada Haxxoz Squad, so we defend ourselves how? By implementing good network and data security? No, but putting in a switch that kills the entire Internet for the whole country. I'm so tired of this.
